As my first visit to Tokyo, I stayed in Ikebukro Rykon called the Kimi
Ryokan. It was explained to me by a long term expat that Ikebukuro
was the working class, no-frills area of Tokyo. And by US standards, its
safe enough to let your six-year-old stroll through unaccompanied.
As for Ikebukuro's bar scene - while a few western-style establishments
do exist, the majority of beer-consumption facilities you'll come across
in Ikebukuro of are those of the Japanese-style, called "izakaya". Izakaya,
unlike bars in the west, delicately balance drinking with large quantities
of food. The food is often moderately-priced (by Tokyo standards) and
always incredibly delicious (by US standards). Ikebukuro is home to many
shops and departments stores within the JR Ikebukuro Station. |
