Ikebukuro

- Ikebukuro, like Roppongi, holds a less-than-prestine reputation amongst most Japanese. However, while Roppongi has earned its marks courtesy of foreign intervention, Ikebukuro's nastiness is purely a Japanese affair. It may has something to do with the myriad of suspicious black-tinted-glass-clad Benzes that roam the garbage-strewn streets.

Them yakuza ain't the most secretive folk. Well, after they read this, they'll know some people are on to 'em and probably track me down to slit their throat :-). But let's also attest the fact that Ikebukuro is far better than it's reputation would lead you to believe.

Tokyo Style

As my first visit to Tokyo, I stayed in Ikebukro Rykon called the Kimi Ryokan. It was explained to me by a long term expat that Ikebukuro was the working class, no-frills area of Tokyo. And by US standards, its safe enough to let your six-year-old stroll through unaccompanied.

As for Ikebukuro's bar scene - while a few western-style establishments do exist, the majority of beer-consumption facilities you'll come across in Ikebukuro of are those of the Japanese-style, called "izakaya". Izakaya, unlike bars in the west, delicately balance drinking with large quantities of food. The food is often moderately-priced (by Tokyo standards) and always incredibly delicious (by US standards). Ikebukuro is home to many shops and departments stores within the JR Ikebukuro Station.
