Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public golf Course
Saikung

Even in these troubled economic times, Hong Kong's golf clubs remain exclusive and virtually impregnable bastions of privilege. However, there is one public golf course at Kau Sai Chau in the New Territories. You need a handicap card, unless you play after 9 p.m. on a weekday, when you must be in a group of three of whom at least one must have a handicap. Green fees are HK$330-380 according to the course you select. There is also a driving range, HK$20 for 20 balls. You can even learn from the resident professional: four two-hour sessions will cost you HK$1,400, and on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7 p.m. you can even have free sessions with the head professional and his assistants.

The city's only public golf course, the Jockey Club's course near Saikung is easily accessible by special golfers' ferries (HK$40 for return trip) that leave every 20 minutes or so from a public pier for Kau Sai Chau. Saikung town can be reached by taking the MTR to Diamond Hill and transferring to the No. 92 bus which takes you to the pier. Out-of-town visitors are welcome weekdays only, and the fee for non-Hong Kong ID holder is HK$1,000 for an 18-hole round. Caddies, if available, are HK$200 per round, and there's also a private bag carrier fee of HK$50 per 18-hole or nine-hole round. An electric trolley fee is HK$100 per round (18-hole), HK$50 per round (9-hole). A full set of clubs can be hired for HK$160 per set per round, and shoes are available at HK$35 per pair per round.
